Dr Alex Mastakov
BVSc MVM FANZCVS (Avian Medicine and Surgery)
On April 14, 2023, we lost a dear friend, colleague, and remarkable veterinarian to an ongoing battle with cancer.
Dr Alex was a natural leader, inspirational teacher, and highly regarded veterinarian. He envisioned a future where unusual and exotic pets could enjoy the same standard of care as dogs and cats. His tireless dedication and commitment made his vision a reality with the Unusual Pet Vets Sunshine Coast opening in October 2021.
Before The Unusual Pet Vets, Dr Alex had many achievements. He graduated from James Cook University in 2013 and worked in various veterinary practices in QLD and NSW (mixed, small animal, and avian/exotic). After which, he relocated to Gatton to undertake an avian medicine and surgery residency and a Doctor of veterinary clinic science postgraduate degree at the University of Queensland in 2018 under Dr Bob Doneley.
Dr Alex also completed an externship in avian medicine and surgery at the Abu Dhabi Falcon Hospital and a Master of Veterinary Medicine Degree through Massey University. He attained his membership in the Avian Chapter of the Australian and New Zealand College of Veterinary Surgeons in 2018 and completed his residency in Avian Medicine and Surgery in 2021.
Dr Alex’s legacy will live on with the next generation of students he inspired, the vets, nurses, and technicians he mentored, and the thousands of animal and human lives he touched.
Fly high, Dr Alex. You will forever be in our hearts and remembered for lighting up a room with your laughter, storytelling, compassion, and inspirational veterinary care.
