Trainee Vet Nurse Kirsty
Certificate II in Animal Studies
Kirsty has always loved animals and her affinity with birds started at 13 with her first pet Budgie. She soon became a ‘crazy bird lady’, adopting more Parrots and learning everything she could to better care for them.
Kirsty wanted to work with birds from a young age and joined Brisbane Bird Vet twice for high school work experience before obtaining her Certificate II in Animal Studies and becoming a vet nurse in a small animal practice. During her 10 previous years of veterinary nursing, she worked for 2 years with Adrian Gallagher at Brisbane Bird Vet and is thrilled to re-join the team with Unusual Pet Vets.
Hobbies and Interests
Kirsty enjoys bush walking, kayaking and any other ways she can bird-watch, while spending time with her husband (who is very patient about stopping to identify and observe the birds). She also enjoys horror movies and board games, with Wingspan being a favourite of course.
When Kirsty isn’t working in clinic, she is passionately making bird toys and providing enrichment puzzles for pets via her business Animal Enrichment Australia, which started in 2012.
Owned Pets
Kirsty has 5 beautiful Parrots including ‘Nibbles’ the “perfect” Quaker Parrot, a Galah named ‘Jewel’ and ‘Precious’ the Short-Billed Corella. Precious has been with her since Kirsty was fourteen. She holds a special place in her heart for her Scaley-Breasted Lorikeet ‘Larry’ and Green Cheek Conures, ‘Scribble’ and ‘Boo’ who have helped inspire Kirsty’s passion for enrichment, behaviour and training.
